“KLSM SINGAPORE” BAGGED “SECOND RUNNERS UP TROPHY”

The Titans of “KLSM Singapore Cricket Team” who are always encouraged and supported by their Managing Director Capt.T. Saito Played SINGAPORE MARINERS’ CRICKET EIGHTS’ “CHALLENGE CUP 2011” held on 23rd October 2011 and bagged the Second runners up trophy .

The veterans of KLSM Singapore were the only team who had complied all the tournament rules and had maximum members from the same company.

The team comprised of: Rajan Mathur (Capt) , Debasish Bohidar (Wk), Amit Bhattacharya, Dushyant Singh, Anuj Mengaji , Deepak Seth, Pranav Chopra, Lokesh Suri, Kunal Chadha,Vijay Kamath.

Composition of matches

The 16 participating teams had been split into 4 groups i.e. 4 teams per group. Each team within the group played all the other teams in their group. Top 2 teams from each of the 4 groups proceeded to the quarter-finals. Winners of each of the quarter-final games played the semi-finals. Winners of the semi-finals played each other in the finals. Losers in semifinals played with each other for the 3rd Position.

The former India captain Mr. Ajit Wadekar was the chief Guest and supported all the teams throughout the tournament. KLSM Singapore was in Group “C” along with AET, BSM, and Bright Oil. This particular group had the toughest opponents as expected.

Team KLSM was enthusiastic and dedicated to win back the Trophy which was won by them 2 times before. The top management Capt. T. saito,Capt. F. Fukuda and Mr. I. Ogawara were present to boost the morale of the KLSM cricket giants. The first match was with AET, who was last Year’s Runners up. The team was geared up to defeat the opponent despite opponent had all young professional cricketers. The KLSM team just needed confidence to beat the so called the super power of Mariners cricket. KLSM won the toss and elected to field. The bowling was on fire from the first over bowled by Capt. A. Bhattacharya. AET managed only 35 runs due to excellent fielding and match strategy by KLSM team. The batsman only needed 6 overs to achieve the target, giving KLSM its First win and the initial boost to rest of the matches.

The Second match was with Bright Oil which had come after several days’ hard practice. While choosing to bat first the KLSM batsman set a stiff target of 72, thanks to some hard hitting by Lokesh and Kunal. The Bright oil team was rattled by superfast bowling of Dushyant and Pranav which restricted them to under 50 runs, giving KLSM its second win of the tournament. KLSM won with a huge margin.

BSM was the third opponent for KLSM in league matches. They were comprised of professional cricketers. KLSM team who was batting first had a batting collapse. They managed only 35 runs which was easy for the opponents. But the superb fielding and bowling kept the match alive till last over. The captain himself led from the front along with wicket keeper Bohidar. But the effort was in vain due to small target set by them to defend.

The 2 wins from 3 games qualified KLSM team qualified for quarter final. The team meeting helped them to regroup together to face the rather tough opponents. The motive was clear to all team members to give their best to win back rest of the matches. The top batsman needed to fire.
KLSM was against “Navigate” in the quarter final. The constant encouragement among the players made the “Navigate” batsmen nervous. The Super spell by Mr. Deepak Seth made the batsmen look fragile. Excellent fielding by Capt Bhattacharya and Dushyant was well supported. Navigate managed 42 runs on board which was easily achieved by KLSM batsmen. The team entered the Semifinals.

The Semifinal was all set to face their rival Tanker Pacific. The Team had lost to Tanker pacific in a practice match. It was the only hurdle to reach to Final. But the dream was shattered from the start of the match. The openers could not milk the runs as expected. The tight bowling of Tankpac never allowed KLSM batsmen to score runs. They managed only 32 runs to defend, which was easily achieved by Tanker Pacific. So dream to reach to final ended in a sad note. KLSM lost their match.

But the last frontier was to beat NYK to become second runners up. The enthusiastic KLSM never say die team had the patience to beat NYK in a bigger margin to receive the “SECOND RUNNERS UP TROPHY”. KLSM CRICKET TEAM IS DETERMINED TO MAINTAIN THEIR HARD PRACTICE DESPITE THE BUSY SCHEDULE AND LIFT THE WINNERS TROPHY NEXT YEAR.

It has been five years since KLSM was established in Singapore. Here, we were celebrating our 5th anniversary at M Hotel in 4th December 2010. It is a very important day to all of us, a relaxing lunch together with all our colleagues, management authorities, their family members as well as other colleagues from Celeste Holding, KLPL, KSP, 1 -Stop, Gateway 21, etc. Last but not least, our ex-President, Meada san, ex-Managing Director, Mohri san, and President, Kuboshima san joined us too. All of us ate together, played together and had fun together! The ever exciting lucky draw event was much enjoyed by everybody too. Moreover, there were many adorable children who brought even more joy to our celebration.

It has been 5 years in Singapore, time flies. Only can think that retirement is getting closer and its now round the corner.

The usual first question anyone asks “How do you like Singapore” and only one answer I can find is “Fine City”, because already have paid a fine. Otherwise its beautiful, except there’s no Season which was so beautiful in Japan. Every season had its own beauty, and was good for the heart & mind. There was always something to look forward to, even the hot summers to warm up the blood. The same garden, the same beach, the same temple but all were different in their own way in different seasons.

Lessons learnt from Tokyo were applied here and advised to all, “Take an apartment close to MRT”. Travelling time is utmost for doing shore jobs, as most of new joiners were first time on shore job. And, its said “Practice what you preach”, 20 steps from MRT and therefore could never move out.

Singapore MRT was so comfortable after Tokyo, lot of breathing space. But slowly, same comfort also got uncomfortable with time.

The office started in Level-1, meeting was just between 6 of us, in a small glass enclosure. Slowly, the numbers grew and we shifted to level-2 and finally to Level-3 for meetings, and today still not enough, need extra chairs. From 7 we have grown to 40 “Pax”, from 7 to 26 vessels, from 3 nationalities, to 4 nationalities and for me from Fleet Manager to General Manager.

Everything had to be started from scratch, all systems had to be applied, Filing system, Ordering system, Record keeping, arranging manuals, etc. Of course, it was all possible due to co-operation and help from the beautiful ladies. All were so cooperative and ever willing to rearrange, as if arranging their own home. Today, everything is in its place, organized and easy to find. Once in a while we would welcome someone new, ofcourse from our own fleet, well known and liked by all. All new joiners had to be made accustomed to systems which were constantly revised and made more user friendly.

Promotable Masters & Chief Engineer candidates were brought to the office to give them hands-on experience of the office procedures, which got us some excellent results. This was the best decision taken by the Superiors which eased a lot of burden on office staff. Ladies would be called by them directly, invited on board for a sumptuous lunch and issues sorted out with a simple phone call.

One of the initial teething troubles worth remembering was to understand Singlish, with words like lah, mah, can, and so on... I will never forget the confusion between sending TO Korea, instead of sending BY Courier. Booking tickets to Colombia instead of Colombo. And of course having the “delicious” Biryani for continuous 6 months, same taste every day, amazing cook, must say!!

There have been some late nights, but they were also made enjoyable with the co-operation of all. The Menu of Pizza-Hut fell short, Mac had to come out with Quarter-pounders, wives started suspecting if actually we had trouble on board, but overall it was fun and we did it. That was the spirit and teamwork by all to achieve the goal.

Then came the Cricket fever, and we amazed all by consecutively winning 2 trophies of the Mariners Cup. There were good teams, good players but none so coordinated and spirited to win & retain the Trophy.
